worst names for comicbook characters

Really? What's wrong with it?

The fact that they had decades to come up with any name they wanted and they end up sticking "Howl" into the name for the guy who constantly compares himself to animals and sometimes hangs out with Wolves.

It's be like making Spider-Man's civilian name Peter Sticky ... or naming Ice-Man Robert Frost.

They may as well have named him "Angry McMetalclaws".

Friggin unimaginitive sloppy douchebag character naming by Marvel on that one.

I totally disagree. Even if Marvel wanted to heavily incorporate the name they'd be perfectly justified, coming from a long line of heroes and villains who have done the same thing. By comparison if you see the howl as a reference to Logan's nature, I'd argue it's much tamer than say..... Otto Octavious.

Also Howlett is a common name, it sounds slightly archaic which plays to the mystique of Logan's character (no pun intended) and the very fact we as a reader can put an accurate name to Wolverine's face and in one of Wolverine's best stories is only a plus for me 😄

Yeah, but that was the innocent 60s where all comic writing was a little more naive.

Putting aspects of a characters nature or powers in his "real" name is fairly pathetic when there are thousands of other names they could have chosen.

Silver Surfer. Really, if he wasn't such an iconic character, we'd cringe at the ridiculousness of it. It reeks of over-the-top 60's comic book cheese. Some of that can be endearing. Some, however, isn't.

The way he got his name in the FF2 movie did make sense though: Johnny was simply describing what he saw. However, when Reed first said the moniker, it seemed like even he was thinking, This is what we're gonna call this guy?

What's bad is that in the comics, the Surfer himself refers to his board as a "board."

I never read this version, but I understand Ultimate Silver Surfer was called the Silver Searcher/Seeker (dropping the Silver part would've been even better). And that he called the board, iirc, void runner (or something like that). Even in the movie, that the Surfer called it a beacon was a vast improvement over "board." 😐

But then, there's always Lisa Snart.

If they renamed Logan "Angry McMetalclaws" I'd have to switch my undying allegiance to him IMMEDIATELY!

We all would ... I think Marvel realised they had no right to use that awesome power to play god.

but howlett is an actual name though, so its not really bad

Like I said, there are thousands of other "actual" names, most of which wouldn't come across like they were naming the character after his own traits.

It's no big deal, it's just one of my comic related pet peeves.

Also, how is that name pronounced? I've always assumed it's pronounced SOD-AM YAT (with the Sodam being pronounced like Sodom and Gomorrah)

But it could be SO-DAMN YAT (like a trendy rapper) or SODE AM YAT (with an emphasis on the "O"😉

Good point. Nice analogy (no seriously). 😂

Robin

Galactus, the cosmic milkman.

Scarecrow

Demon Bear

DC has worse names I think.

Crazy Quilt
Angle Man
Egg Fu
The Fiddler (hahaha!)
Psycho-Pirate

Edit: The Monocle....facepalm

I think it's supposed to be that way because Surfer's form was inspired by a comic book from his childhood.

I don't get it, what's wrong with him referring to it as a board? Zenn-La was more advanced then Earth and they had oceans so it's reasonable to assume that they were Surfing at some point. I understand if you're referring to the "Universal Language" in comics, but beyond that I really don't see the problem with it.

I don't think that was the original intent back in the day but rather something, years later, writers and/or fans thought up to have it make more sense. I'm not even sure it's a canon explanation.

It's not the concept of surfing, per se (cool idea, actually, very original back when everyone else was flying in standard horizontal position). But the Surfer calls it the same thing everyone else does. He has a much deeper understanding and connection; you'd think he'd call it something more closely reflecting its purpose (like void glider or star threader). I thought in the FF2 movie, SS calling it a beacon made good sense, almost obvious, really.

I need to get a copy of Ultimate Silver Surfer. I have Ultimate Galactus, where SS is some kind of wing-sprouting, multijawed heralding angel of destruction. I was disappointed with that version.

Everything else surfer says is translated, why wouldn't "mega-cosmic-energy-super-gliding-device" be shortened to board for the listener's benefit?

That makes sense when he's among regular humans, sure. But certainly (comics) Reed would've been able to grasp "mega-cosmic-etc."

And what about when SS is out in space talking to himself (you know how he loves to monologue)...? If nothing else, "board" is blah.

I'm curious as to what narrative contexts Ultimate Surfer called it the glider/threader.
