I don't think that was the original intent back in the day but rather something, years later, writers and/or fans thought up to have it make more sense. I'm not even sure it's a canon explanation.

It's not the concept of surfing, per se (cool idea, actually, very original back when everyone else was flying in standard horizontal position). But the Surfer calls it the same thing everyone else does. He has a much deeper understanding and connection; you'd think he'd call it something more closely reflecting its purpose (like void glider or star threader). I thought in the FF2 movie, SS calling it a beacon made good sense, almost obvious, really.

I need to get a copy of Ultimate Silver Surfer. I have Ultimate Galactus, where SS is some kind of wing-sprouting, multijawed heralding angel of destruction. I was disappointed with that version.

The way I always saw it was that if he were speaking to Galactus, or in Zen-La-ian or whatever, it'd translate as to something that makes more sense. Since he's speaking translated-English, "board" is the closest thing to it.

That makes sense when he's among regular humans, sure. But certainly (comics) Reed would've been able to grasp "mega-cosmic-etc."

And what about when SS is out in space talking to himself (you know how he loves to monologue)...? If nothing else, "board" is blah.

I'm curious as to what narrative contexts Ultimate Surfer called it the glider/threader.

Ultimate Surfer didn't really talk much.

Well, when he's out in space, you kind of just have to chalk it up to the fact that if he was speaking in an unintelligible alien dialect, you wouldn't be reading the comic.

Yeah, I understand that point. I'm just figuring he could've translated it into something cooler. Heck, even in the movie, when the Surfer calls it the beacon, and Sue says, you mean the board? the Surfer nods very, very slightly (maybe he was thinking, Yes, the "board," you hot-bodied, micro-brained biped.)

me....I think howlett is superb...that harkens back to the old school 18th century gold rushy times......when names like bilderberger, and pinkerton emerged...also Howlett is a real name that has British and Canadian roots...so my fanboyishness refuses to even entertain the idea that they named him Howlett cuz he's feral and he "howls" from time to time

back on topic: Animal Man, Floronic Man, Scarlett Skier(yes its real) The Isolationist<-----cuz he likes to keep himself "Isolated"
