If some don’t know what the job is going to be like but others have friends already on the railway they tell them what pay is like and how worth it the course is

But no, there are strikes and protests going on in many UK universities right now due to a bunch of different reasons, e.g. universities suffering cutbacks and insufficient funding while the bosses and board members still get millions of pounds a year for doing naff all.
