The truth is the vast majority of people wouldn't be offended by a woman president or by a gay president.
So if a woman fails to become president it's not because she is a woman. Just like if a gay person fails it isn't because they are gay.
Nationalism is only seen as a bad concept because of World War II, and the convenient slanting of fascism as the "bad guy". When, like all of history, there were many dangerous ideas going on at once. As Russia was not our enemy, communism and by extension Marxism was not taught as the social poison it is. If the enemy were Russia, and by extension communism, and Germany / Italy were our allies, our universities may well by now be infested with fascists by now instead.

I think it's because some people have trouble grasping nuance and their brains automatically go to "white nationalism" and thus "white supremacy" whenever they hear the word "nationalism". We are told the word is a racist dog whistle.
Though wouldn't only racists hear a racist dog whistle?
