The sad part is that it was cancelled just as it had started to do some of the best work ever done on the series, the 4th season was the worst of all the seasons, this is the general consensus among fans and I agree with it. The Connor/Cordelia storyline is cringe. There are a few high points in the season, but overall it seemed like the show was running out of steam.Then the 5th season comes and it's excellent and it shows that the series still had a lot more story to tell. Networks usually waited until towards the end of a season before deciding on if they wanted to renew a series. Whedon pushed for a decision early on in the 5th season and they decided to cancel. It very likely would have been renewed if he had not done that since it was the #1 show on the network at the time.
I read that too, he was pretty convinced they would have said "yes" if he had held off. It's a shame in a lot of ways. But season 4 is definitely the worst, the Connor stuff is awful, and they really took an axe to Cordelia Chase.
