In my third year we learned about the star system which basically means actors will play the same role/persona whatever because fans demand and expect it.

Dicapprio is probably the worst when it comes to this.

To be honest, I was shocked at the level of comprehension and depth of film knowledge amongst my peers. It's atrocious at times. Being the only person in the class who's even heard of Kurosawa is not a good feeling.

Seriously though, Cage is phenomenal. You just need to find the right films (even in terrible films, he's ridiculously entertaining and can make a bad film enjoyable). There's a reason that he's won an Oscar.

We did the Hollywood Star System in the first year, only got to about 1980 though, didn't get to how the Star System works in the modern-day

The media department was full of morons though. I was friends with them, they know next to nothing. It's kinda embarrassing thinking I was friends with these people.

Anyway, enough of the media students bashing, lol.

I think kick ass was cage's best film. Really sold him for me. But then I watched drive angry. Lol.

I think in a good role he gives a good performance, but not as the star.

Wild at Heart, Leaving Las Vegas, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. 'Nuff said, man. The guy's incredible. But yeah, he was the best thing about Kick-Ass.

But we got to choose which stars we could talk about and why it works, so we looked at modern stars like Samuel l Jackson and dicapprio. I think someone mentioned Matt Damon too.

I was pretty stoned at uni. Love Kurosawa tho.

We have a tonne of different courses here so I don't really know what everyone I know studies, but there are some smart cookie amongst us. The breadth of film knowledge amongst the Film Studies and Film and English Combined BA students is pretty shocking, though. There are Media students with much more refined tastes than anyone else on my course, other than me, obvs.

For some reason, I've been less stoned since I've started uni than any other point since before I turned 16 awehuhs however, I've drank a shittonne more, I guess. Many lonely nights drinking two or three bottles of wine to myself in first year.

Drinking wine by yourself is pretty pathetic. Can't even remember the last time I had wine.

See, that's the thing: the films I mentioned there, none of them are action films. Before Face/Off, Con Air and The Rock, Cage didn't really do action. He was more of a weird lead man/character actor combo. He's done a lot of really weird films, and I love him for that.

I'll search for those films on Netflix.
