Tramadol doesn't do a thing to me besides take the pain away. That's so weird. I've taken codeine and vicodine for pain and neither would do a thing for the pain.

I happen to be a fan of fountain pens. If she doesn't have one already, a Pilot Metropolitan or Lamy Safari are great starter pens.

Then there's the ink. You can get cartridges for them. They come with refillable ones so you could also get her some ink. Bottle ink isn't too expensive.

You could also get her a notebook. Clairfontaine is good. Kinda pricy. leuchtturm1917 is also good and around the same price. Rhodia makes great notepads. I use one for work and they can handle fountain pen ink.
