My finds so far point to W being pronounced as both 'W' and 'V' for different words, as well as there being different dialects of German on top of that, so that must be why even Germans mispronounce 'Werner Herzog'. Most sites have German people pronouncing the word and they all say 'Verner' as well.
It's similar to how the Japanese R sound is between L and R, so Japanese people have difficulty differentiating between L and R when they learn English - also English speakers have difficulty getting the R right in Japanese

Marius says the German W sound is in between the English W and V sounds, generally. It also varies a little with some words, like English. It's similar to how the Japanese R sound is between L and R, so Japanese people have difficulty differentiating between L and R when they learn English - also English speakers have difficulty getting the R right in Japanese
So does this mean I can pronounce 'Werner' either way and technically not be wrong either way? mhmm
