dude, the Phalanx isn't going to work on an open battle field when your being heavily flanked. The phalanx falls apart like a weak cobweb. As for the Myrmidon not displaying the sheer awsomeness as the 300, well that's matter of opinion i suppose. Where as the entire movie was dedicated to sculpting the spartans penis into a golden Statue, we only get a glimpse at what the Myrmidon are capable of. When they stormed the beach, they did that with a moving phalanx. That hints at their versatility. Once they established that formation they cut down the onslaught of Troy soldiers like a sledge hammer pounding plastic army men. Anytime that the Myrmidon went into battle with the other Greeks, The Trojans lost and lost hard. Without the Myrmidon, the Greeks were constantly being driven back to the beaches.
Unless the Spartans are fighting under the exact same conditions as they were in 300, at the hot gates (bottle kneck) there is no way they can win. It may only take the Spartans half an hour or so to cut through the Gangs of New York but it won't even take the MYrmidon and the Lord of the Rings characters half that time to drop the Spartans as they are distracted and preoccupied.
I only mentioned the light armor because i believe the Myrmidon are fair better outfitted for battle. They may be laced in fine leathers, but their shields are half the size of the Spartans, and they also don't have 6 foot long ass capea to worry about. That will also be a problem for the Spartans. 😂 jk Big ass men getting caught up on their capes
I still don't see how Achilles is overrated. Overrated compared to whom? He could best anyone on that list and has just as much and more experience than most. I mean, i know the Spartans and Myrmidon are essentially, but i believe the 300 are overrated. It was seriously, their geographical conditions which granted them such glorious victories.
Achilles, Aragorn and legalos are not stupid enough to get caught in that trap. Those three are far more skilled in battle than Leonidas. Maybe not so much Legalos but definitely Achilles and Aragorn.
How are they "heavily flanked"? (they're not, they have more men)
Because the 300 did that same Phalanx feat against thousands of guys, not hundreds, they also did it against, ogre-men, gigantic battle elephants, bomb tossers etc. etc. etc. The 300 were far superior to the Achilles' men.
Again, they're not out-maned, so there's no need for the bottle-neck maneuver. They have more than enough to cover their flanks with shields and spears.
Without his supposed invulnerability (as it is here) Achilles is overrated in a massive battle. One on one, he's a complete bad-ass; facing a wall of shields and spears, he's not going to be dancing about and killing everything.
The 300 in the movie where nigh super-human, in the opening battle thousands of Persians crushed against the 300 and they held their ground, slammed them back and them slaughtered all without losing a single guy. If that doesn't impress you, I really don't see how the Myrmidon did.
Legolas(one of the best on the team) has his bow, he'll kill one per arrow, most likely, but I doubt he has more than a score of arrows. After that, he has to get close, while the spears have the advantage of reach and the Spartan has near complete protection from helmet, shield and grieves. Same goes for Aragorn, he has to get in close. Achilles is going to have to go in too, I'd suspect he'd go in with his men in formation, otherwise he'd be a fool to try a solo feat against fellow Spartans.
In the end, it comes down to the 300 fighting as one complete unit, that unit being heavily protected and them having the advantage of more.
More things of note, 300 can toss a spear at great distance with pinpoint accuracy, the Persian captain on horseback and the battle rhino who were both skewered. They're also great warriors out of formation.
