Aside from being the best of the three starters in first generation (Blastoise can go to hell), Charizard was among the most saught after trading cards, and even in the show was among Ash's most powerful pokemon (if not the most powerful to my knowledge) once he finally started to listen to him (and was also a ruthless badass in that manga, almost kiling another Charizard), on at least two or three occasions beating pokemon that had an elemental advantage over him. I can name at least three friends of mine who still indulge within pokemon solely for Charizard.

And yeah, I forgot about Gengar too. Awesome stuff. Appearance-wise though, I actually thought Haunter was better. I knew some who didn't ever want to evolve their Haunter because of that.

Haunter did have an awesome appearance.

I prefer Haunter over Gengar despite the slight superior stats. Haunter was badass.

I've gotta admit, it was always close between Haunter/Gengar and Kadabra/Alakazam for me. The later two are sweet!

Kadabra and Alakazam are awesome as well.

Another one I liked was Machamp, cause he was all bigzor buffzor.

Alakazam is in my platinum party too, him and Haunter.

When it comes out, I'm getting Heart Gold/Soul Silver (probably just HG) on the DS for old time's sake.
