Oblivion is a construct dependent of Kyle and his GL ring. Your in luck, I just happen to be working on a GL Kyle's revamp respect thread.
The simplest explanation as to who Oblivion is…well its Kyle. He is Kyle’s “Id“. The physical manifestation of his repressed feeling/emotions (sorrow, anger, self doubt, and fear). These bottled up emotions threaten Kyle, and with the GL ring he subconsciously expelled them, which gave Oblivion a physical form.

Note: This seems to have bin ratified in the rebirth of the Corps, since the rings are now programmed to limit its power to anyone exceeding its own set of capacitors or limitations. As in the case with John attempting to recreate an entire Solar system, and the ring limiting its energy generated through his will power.

Oblivion, is Kyle creation...albiet a fraction of it. Since Oblivion could only exist if Kyel lived. And he wanted to be the dominate persona, so he can stop his demonstration and show what he can really do with the ring. That's why Kyle threaten to kill himself, to end Oblivion's terror.
