Easily rationalized, after he's beaten the Pred and it activates the nuke, McClane jumps down the mail chute and slides his ass to the reinforced cement structure that is the mail room/basement of the building, where he safely rides out the explosion.

Though I foresee the building exploding as he's sliding down and he escapes it just in the nick o time. All climatic and McClanish.
