Thoughts on Polanski's arrest?

are you aware of how difficult it is to get victims of rape to come forward and testify or to even press charges in many cases?

Your link didn't work (not that it matters, I posted a copy of the trial in the opening post), so I didn't read further.

I did read the last paragraph, as my eye caught the word "screwed". His crimes were whittled down to one crime and he was given probation for this, this in no way is being "screwed".

Him fleeing and committing another crime is what is screwed and shows a lack of intelligence on his part.

His crimes were not 'whittled down', there was just simply not enough evidence to convict him of the other accusations.

The only thing that's really speculation is the judge throwing the book at him. Granted, it could have happened(just as Jesus could come back), but it's unlikely; it's far more likely that he would have served out his probabtion and then been done.
Regardless of whether that was true or not, the judge was assuredly corrupt, and that was the reason for Polanski fleeing the country.

All black Americans in prison deserve this privilege as well, then

I agree but only for those in which bias proved to influence the outcome/sentencing of the case. What's your point?

that "he was going to throw the book at me" isn't actually a good defense. imho i guess

however, what is the "the judge was going to throw the book at me" argument actually arguing for?

Can you really get a mistrial because the judge gave you a legally acceptable sentence?

I believe that angle is being used as an excuse to Polanski skipping out on his parole.

Doubtful. I believe you can appeal though.

so, its just as valid, then, as saying "I didn't think I'd like jail"?

appeal to have the sentence reduced or appeal to have the entire case retried?

There was ample evidence, her testimony for one. Him being the adult of the two. Him setting up the scenario. Him providing alcohol and drugs. It's likely he knew influential people, or the prosecution wanted to get him on at least one thing, or look the incompetents. That is irrelevant though, since he pleaded guilty to a charge, was giving parole and then broke it. This is the issue.

More wild accusations on this judge, after the fact. Considering the fool got a sentence of just parole, I'd say the judge was lenient.

Basically, yes.

Since he already pleaded guilty, the only thing he could appeal would be the sentencing, if the judge would have thrown jail time after he completed his parole sentence, iirc.

eg If you plead guilty to petty-theft and you get a sentence of 95 years in a Federal pound-you-up-the-ass prison, an appeal would be in order to review your sentencing.

(off to watch No Such Thing)

Heard a snipe on the radio this morning. Another actress has come forward and accused Polanski of preying and then forcing himself on her, when she was 16.

Film director Roman Polanski has been accused by an English actress of sexually abusing her when she was sixteen years old.

In her allegations against Polanski, Charlotte Lewis - who appeared in the director's 1986 film "Pirates" - claims that Polanski engaged in "sexually predatory conduct" when he forced himself upon her.

"He knew [how old I was] when he met me and forced himself upon me in his apartment in Paris," Lewis told press in a Los Angeles news conference organized by her lawyer, Gloria Allred. "He took advantage of me and I have lived with the effects of his behavior ever since it occurred. I've traveled to the U.S. at my own expense to make sure that justice is finally done and that Mr. Polanski gets what he deserves. All I want is justice."

Polanski, whose lawyers did not comment on Lewis' allegations, is currently in Switzerland under house arrest and faces extradition to the U.S. for sentencing on charges of raping a 13-year-old girl back in 1977.

I'm torn on it. But not coming forward and trying to forget about rape is apparently common in rape victims.

She's also not suing him(least I haven't heard), though his lawyers did threaten to sue her.

I was joking, I've never served.

But you need to go to France, find a FRL recruitment office and apply. I'd learn French first though, It'd be a lot easier.

I'm pretty sure it's changed a lot since the late 19th/early 20th century though.
