Your top 3 prime examples of 'all Flash, no Substance' in gaming.

this is one of the very very few games that exceeded my expectations
what makes you think that?

The game, to me, succeeds in many aspects, except where it needs too, game play. I feel like if they didn't focus so much on graphics and fan service, they coulda actually made a more enjoyable game to play. The fights were repetitive and there wasn't much room for strategy due to the fact that the mechanics for battle just wasn't deep enough for me. I feel like they shoulda just made the game an RPG rather than this awkward half ass attempt at a fighting game with RPG like elements and this clear burning desire to make the fights appear like the battle sequences seen in Advent Children. But that's just what I think.

I didn't like Bioshock either - never completed a full playthrough - but it had some substance. Listening to the audio files of the specialists of Rapture and even the laymen added a lot to the game, I just wasn't having fun playing through it.

When you start forcing yourself to play through a game you know it's not for you. Although the first 2 or 3 hrs were fun.

As for the topic, of the games I've played:-

Darkvoid, Timeshift and Scrapland (had a lot potential, but it doesn't realize it beyond the first 45 minutes).

This is pretty much what I meant. If I'm misunderstanding the intended meaning of "all flash but no substance" then sorry. byez now.

Wait wut?

You mean... When you saw that trailer, you thought that is how the gameplay was meant to be?

I loled.

Trying to "deceive" us, lawl.

Really? Why is everyone sayin' that? I was gonna buy this. From 1 to 10, what would you give it?

i give it an honest 5, and if it's one thing i am it's a HARDCORE rpg/jrpg fan, but this game has no RP. It's been striped barebones into cgi cutscenes and battle, level design is non existant, 5 years to develope the graphics and get them all shiney - which they are btw , but what else would you expect from square - but the game falls flat on it's arse. Personally i think square need to re-examine the definition of Role-playing game. Because what they have here is a perfect example of a whole new type of game , what can i call it...a SASIM, a Segmented Action Semi-Interactive Movie. "levels designed to reduce player stress" was actually an advertising phrase, and they aernt kidding, because there is no level design, you can't NOT complete this game because everything is a straite line. An actual straite line level design, it might aswell be an On-rails RPG, if you could have such a thing. FFXV anyone?

You should give the game a chance. I assumin' you haven't played it yet. Have you?

ONes that come to mind straight away (because I've been playing them recently)

DMC,
Bayonetta,
Heavy Rain (As great as the game is, it's an interactive film, gameplay substance is limited)

hell YES. star wars is an ugly universe, all desert and geeky tech{and not in a good way like the way the new gods are geeky etc}. the races are bland and uninteresting, infact the design of everything from the storm troopers to the jedi is boring. the older designs of final fantasy 6 and 9 were a lot better/colourful/original, worlds/music/feel/races n all.

pray tell what WAS the story of ff12 other than a random bunch of arbitrary impersonal events which as it so happened had no real connection or conclusion. the character were bland/unifrom and un interesting. the whole thing was shit actually, and i played it the whole way too.

ff-10 although not the best fantasy by a long shot was a whole lot better and a whole lot more memorable.

yes, killzone 1 SUCKED, nothing but graphics there. killzone 2 wasnt much better. i dunno was it gears of war or resistance. they both seemed like nuthing but goodlooking titls used to advertise their consoles. no depth there.

Seems like you feel alseep while playing the game for you to say "arbitrary impersonal events which as it so happened had no real connection or conclusion"

The stoyline failed and all the characters dressed up like they've just returned from a gay festivel

the story failed in certain places, but it was a great experience overall, it sucked you in to its wonder and otherworldliness. far cry from having NO story like ff13.

says who? it was good for its time but cmon. if you want a REAL space opera watch firefly/various manga based space operas of the time. or play xenogears/xenosaga/mass effect.

star trek was great. star wars had good characters, a decent base story and good effects. the world/themythos/the races/the surroundings were BUTT UGLY and boring to boot.

Please....don't tell me to play more good games i've probably waaaaaaay more then you.

its kinda like the difference between street fighter and mortal combat. the second one is just made of fail{although maybe a slightly different kind}, its tacky and dephtless in all areas.

erm, mk2 requires u to almost COMPLETE the game, as in do everything. it was a subtle sign towards me not being asleep.

then why did u say i was asleep when i stated that it was crap?

i doubt it.

as a classic, sure. it was revolutionary. and people in the 70s-80s held a speial place for it in their heart.

but still, no sustitute for its lack of substance. just a new age american golden boy with daddy issues married to the tech revolution and the damsell in distress.
