I had a look at the issue again and I don't think the spaceship was in the Earths Upper Atmosphere (EUA) I suppose it depends on what you mean by EUA, it was building up it's thrusters to leave Earth and they had a 10 second window of opportunity.

No it looked like it was stagnant after launch. It was building up it's engines to carry out a warp. Yes it was going to take 10 seconds to build up but I don't think that amounts to 25,000 miles/h I think it's much less then that.

Caps shield is lighter but somewhat more durable if their was any notable difference bewteen the two materials...
