I agree. In the novels description he did very well against Palpatine (considering this is the Most Powerful Sith Lord in History).
He had to drop his defences to save the rebels, otherwise it culd have been EVEN closer.
Also his feats from the novel (not comic or gameplay) are most impressive. He takes down an AT-AT's with the Force alone. And he does divert a Star Destroyer.
So yeah I do think he'd take Mace, and even have a decent shot at Yoda.
