chaos couldn't do it alone. He needed to send the Gnosis into Nephilim (who had Mary's power) and open the way to Lost Jerusalem. It was the only way to slow the universe's destruction.
Absorbing the Gnosis doesn't make anything cosmic about here.
That's still a feat beyond what Bayonetta could do (and this is by version 1 which is supposed to be the weakest KOS-MOS that is playable).

That's still something that KOS-MOS is capable of doing. The only difference is that she doesn't get the Tertiary Weapon System until Episode 2 and she's in an upgraded body.
