When the evil couple entered the cube first they made it a dark and twisted reality where pleasure was pain. The cube could have been a beautiful place.

As the years went by more people got sucked into the cube and only those with strong resolve and a particular mindset survived the process and became Cenobites.

Cenobites grow stronger by torturing themselves and others. Feeding the Cube.

They are simply normal people sent through a filter and some emerge as twisted versions of their past selves but now representing the cube.
