Frieza, someone with a good bit of knowledge on Saiyans outright stated that his advantage over Goku was that he (unlike Goku) didn't need to breathe.

And I thought the whole problem Saiyans had with surviving in space is that they'll run out of air eventually.

How does making an air tight force field around himself solve Vegeta's problem?

When they thought Goku was dead after his battle with Frieza I'm fairly certain King Kai cautioned against using the Dragon Balls to resurrect him because that would just bring him back into empty space where he would quickly die from lack of air.
