Avatar: The Legend of Korra

Ok, so criticism time:

Did anyone else notice that for almost everything they made fun of in those Nuktuk movies, they actually did in the story? Like, the joke is how cheesy and bad the Nuktuk movies are, but ironically they actually mirror the really plot scarily well:

Unalaq is portrayed as a cartoonishly evil supervillain who's trying to destroy the world in the movie. Unalaq actually is a cartoonishly evil supervillain who's trying to destroy the world.

Pabu can inexplicably shoot lasers from his eyes. Vaatu and Giant Blue Korra can inexplicably shoot lasers from their chests.

Nuktuk escapes through whistling. Bumi escapes through playing his flute.

The whole thing with Bolin mirroring the actions that are happening in the movie as he fights Varricks thugs.

His motives are basic but nothing wrong with that, basically he wants what all tyrants want - power. Happens in RL all the time. Except you know.. getting possessed by dark spirits which only happened like two times...

For people complaining that all characters gotta be either "black or white" Varrick is a breathe of fresh air. The guy is a dick but he's all kinds of awesome. And not all bad if you think about it.

His escape plan made me laugh out loud.

He is awesome, but the dude wanted to start a civil war just so he could make money.

Uh, no he didn't.

He may have no "started" it but he was clearly trying to instigate one once the blockade hit.

I think his point was that Varrick didn't start a war to increase profits, he wanted war because the North was restricting trading.

Also opening the spirit portals would have made his shipping empire completely worthless.

Or maybe he actually thought Unalaq needed to be brought to justice!

Or he didn't wanted the North to oppress the South. It seemed he was far less interested in profits and more interested in getting the North defeated. Hence, why he was trying so hard to get Republic City to enter the war on the side of the South rather than simply sell stuff too both sides.

Making a nice tidy profit seemed to just be a bonus.

The first argument Varrick made was how was he going to sell smelly fish. He was definitely doing it for the money.

Oh, money of course was part of his incentive. But he didn't start a civil war just so he could begin war profiteering which was how I read DP's post.

He later goes on arrange for explosions in the middle of Republic City, overtake Asami's company, threaten Mako, try to take a dude hostage (albeit, said dude deserved to be taken hostage and punched in the face for being such a douchenozzle), all to start a war.

At the very least, the dude's morally grey. He's still awesome though.

The war already started at that point though. He was just trying to draw the United Republic into it presumably so the North would be crushed. However, I am not saying he is a good guy as he most certainly is not.

I love Varrick, but I've had a character who's basically just like Varrick (even down to looks and fashion style) in my head for years now, and I'm worried that the writers of LOK mindprobed me.

Though I guess they're both just emanations of the eccentric rich guy archetype.

as for his morality, it's hard to say. The guy is so charming and hilarious that you want to think that he has a good heart, but every nice/good thing he does might just be part of a long game of hearts-and-minds to mask unbound greed.

I really hope he's the main "villain" of the next book, or at least a main character.

Someone said that the next season should be about Korra trying to found a human settlement in the spirit world, which I think is a pretty awesome idea myself.

Very short but I thought that brief scene was way better then the stupid giant-laser-blasting-typical-anime showdown.

What was so bad about the final fight? I thought it was suitably epic for a battle 10,000 years in the making. Frankly, that battle should be beyond anything we've seen before and on a scale larger than an ordinary bending fight. Especially when we had a ton of those kinds of fights right before it.

It was born out of stupid plot devices that had no explanation and it was lazy. They just punched each other around with their big fists and shot some energy. That is like the default for every anime ever. Not to mention that a lot of possible emotional moments were lost because they were giant spirits.

Do you seriously prefer something like that to an intricate, well written bending fight? Well, I guess to each his own.

My one hope for the next season is that Korra starts to LEARN and GROW. I want to like her so bad, but she's so shitty. I truly, genuinely hope that she starts maturing and doesn't immediately revert like she did this season from the finale of the last. I think that would just kill the show. This entire season, she has been the cause of most of the problems, constantly blames other people, and is generally more of a hindrance with all her emotional baggage and drama.

Unalaq as a character is boring as hell but hot damn is he a really good fighter lol.

He might honestly be the best solo waterbender in the series. Katara and Pakku are the only ones who might be more impressive.
