Lighter Arab women were preferred in Arab countries historically. If the Arab woman was lighter it meant she was of a wealthy family. It indicated that she sat in the shade while others worked for her in the sun, thus those without a tan were seen as ''better''.

Now they're mostly without a tan since the Salafists decided it's 'Isamic' to wear hijab.

I can't really say I am proud of my race or ethnicity for the fact that I have so many different cultures and ethnicitys in my backround that it is hard to identify with any.. yes I am an american but that's not all I am because of my ancestors.
