The Scenario
Greater Sci-Fi combatant
Pryce looked at his hands nervously as he talked, and occasionally shot quick looks to the corner of the room, where the Blank Jewel lay covered.
"My grandfather," he started, "Nicholas Arken, used to be something of a professional thief and treasure hunter. He used to be called the Shadowman, because no one ever saw him; they said stuff just disappeared into the shadows."
"What'd he steal?" Bennu asked, interested.
"Art, mostly, and historical artifacts. He would sneak into archaeological digs sometimes to swipe things. That's where he found the, uh, the Blank Jewel. There was an ancient temple there, pretty much full of skeletons. A cult devoted to destruction of the world. The Jewel was on a sacrificial altar when my grandfather found it. As soon as he touched it, it cursed him with...this." Pryce gestured to his body.
"Ugh," Bennu said, "Sounds terrible. But what was that voice?" she asked, glancing at the corner of the room.
Pryce shuddered. "Luminil. He calls himself an old god, and he's...scary. I don't know exactly how powerful he is but, that temple? He wiped it off the map. It was just gone, like somebody scooped it right out of the ground. Now people think it's a meteor strike. My grandfather woke up afterward like this, with the Jewel around his neck. He's told my dad all this, before he died. He said that Luminil was bad news. He thinks he could actually destroy the world. " Pryce exhaled loudly, before giving the Jewel another look.
Bennu got up from the bed and paced the room a few times, looking at her formerly broken hand. With a thought, she made it glow brightly, and held a point of brilliance on one finger.
"He called me firebird, even before I was using my powers. I wonder what he meant by it." She looked over in Pryce's direction thoughtfully. "And he called you 'Anchor.' I wonder what those were about?"
"I don't know about firebird," Pryce started, "but he mentioned something about a seal with it. No idea. But with the Anchor thing, ugh. I've managed to find out that Luminil doesn't really exist in the same way we do. He's in another dimension or something, but he can't get out...so he needs something here before he can use his powers."
Bennu's eyes widened as she understood, and the light on her hands spread to the rest of her body, shining intensely in all directions. The temperature of the room increased a few degrees. She turned to where the Jewel was.
"He's using you to reach this world," she said flatly.
"Yes," Pryce choked out, close to tears.
"Your powers. Those are actually his?"
"Yes," Pryce said, actually crying now. "I die if I don't use them, but if I die, he can't return. My powers are just made for hurting people, and I can't even control them. I could stop all of it if I just died."
Bennu turned around. She grabbed Pryce by shoulder and stared right through him, still shining with light.
"That not going to happen, Pryce," she said.
"Everyone would be safe," Pryce continued. "What's just one person vs. all that?"
"Don't think like that," Bennu released her hold, turning towards the door. "Never think like that. Especially when you," she pointed at Pryce, "have the power to win."
