I looked around real quick but I couldn't find it. I'm not sure the exact interview or where I read it (ign, newsarama, cbr ect), and it now occurs to me it might have been Tomasi and not Dini... but I'm not sure. I know I read it somewhere shortly after battle for the cowl, but I don't recall enough info to find it again. 🙁

He is also a significantly more skilled fighter, which is the primary reason for him being even a mild threat to Slade. DS has superhuman stats across the board, but he isn't that hot of a fighter, maybe Punisher level... maybe.

If you consider the fact that Cass, Batman(Bruce) have also given him problems among other streets. And with NW getting a push and stalemating Cass herself. Then him giving problems to Slade doesn't seem that bad either.
Don't get me wrong Slade would win the majority against them but not easily.

DS is on the very low-low end of the spectrum in superhuman-is though. That's why DC coined him twice in the books as being almost superhuman. Black Panther and Cap have also been termed almost superhuman.
I thinks its more his team fights with equipment and tactical planning that make him more of a threat then just a straight up fight against the best. Although he IMO was still take the majority over guys like Cass and Batman IMO.

Dick was raised by Bruce at a young age and was trained by batman himself... a guy who traveled the world to learn and then refined his MA to the most efficient form of fighting then turning around teaching nightwing after removing the frivolous MA crap from his own style.
now Dick is far younger more athletic faster agile then Bat's who batman himself acknowledges whcih is why bat's wears more body armor kevlar then nightwing.. Batman is a brute compared to Dick..
now Dick does a lot better against DS then bats does.. add the fact that Dick has bn around batman for so long he should be able to read batman like a book.

dick wears less body armour than batman to help him use his agility more. bruce wears the same amount he always wore. he doesn't add to it because he feels old/unfit.
bruce isn't getting on in age either. he's still in a reasonably strong physical condition, as good as he's ever been, so i don't see him weakening any time soon.
you also have to remember that dick was still a teenager when bruce turfed him out; bruce couldn't have taught him everything he knows.
