Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I downloaded Oblivion for the PC recently, from Steam. And... I swear to you, I gave it my best shot.

But... my god. The controls are just... so god awful. The entire inventory system in itself is ****ing horrible. I don't understand how any of you people could stand this.

mods kind of solve this issue, however I tried to play the game again and notice the controls having aged well myself.

This.

The beauty of PC gaming is the customization.

So, it's a valid complaint to say that there's serious flaws with Oblivion. And I agree with that assessment. But the awesome parts are more awesome than pretty much any other RPG that came out around that time, and the flaws can largely be blunted via mods.

I noticed the controls weren't as good as I remember them either. i guess I was just soo amazed by how cool it looked and felt in comparison to the stiffness of vanilla Morrowind i never thought of it.

I also hadn't sunk massive hours into WoW developing a consistent keyboard preference. Before then, I never really standardized my control scheme, and it would change massively between games. I would probably be a lot less forgiving of Oblivion's controls now.

It's like, how in Christ did I move with arrow keys? That's one among many.

He does have a point Oblivion was design with consoles in mind and so will Skyrim based on some of the rumors I heard, which means the game will be a port. Hopefully not like the shitty rage port.

I regret never getting to play the game with mods, but I've played enough games on a computer to know that a first-person fantasy RPG with a difficulty scale of 1-to-1,000,000%, feels much better with a controller than a mouse and keyboard.

It's actually relatively proven on a competitive level that mouse + keyboard is superior to gaming controllers when mastered. Maybe you haven't put in the time to feel as comfortable, so that's a valid reason, but to say that controllers are superior to computers setups is pretty demonstrably false. If that's true for you, cool, each case is different. But there's no reason controls have to hold anyone back. Chances are there will be quite a bit of customization anyway.

With me first person feels more comfortable with mouse and keyboard, but most third person games i've felt better with a controller. For high action oriented games that is.

Skyrim is not really a third person game, it can be played in third person though. I dont think controls are going to be a problem but if people cant work with a keyboard and mouse in this day and age then i lold. I would never play Oblivion if it was not for the mods, which in many cases can make it a completly new game, or give it a massive overhaul.

As a general rule I only like to use mods on a subsequent playthrough, as for the first playthrough I like to play the game exactly as it was originally designed by the developers, and using mods has the capacity to create balancing issues and do not necessarily fit consistently within the overall fabric of the game design, and they can quite often simply conflict with how the developers wished for their game to be played.

Now that I've learned to mouse-turn in many games, utilize macros and alternate keybinds frequently, and have a mouse with very precise control on it, no controller will ever be as versatile. For a long time this was true of me too where I preferred console controllers. But I really believe it's just a learning curve thing.

I think that experience can be said to concern alot of games, and thank God for that, if you didn't feel that the controls had become worse it would in some regards mean that development in that area would basically have been stalled for 5 years.

I've never felt comfortable playing games with a mouse and keypad; controllers have always been superior for me. And I grew up using both.
