Swearing: Is it wrong?

Spoiler:
Shit, Fvck, Damn, Hell, Bastard....
The list goes on. Is it a 'sin' to use these words? If so, is it only a matter of context? Are certain words only considered profanity because you were raised to believe they were (i.e. stupid)? Thoughts please.

If you use God's name in vain it is. If you're a Buddhist, Right Speech is part of the Noble Eightfold Path.

So it depends what you believe. Hindus by and large have no prohibition of cursing.

Good answers.

Swearing's fine. But cursing is a hell-worthy sin.

I'd say it's a matter of context especially considering the fact that we have so many different languages on earth. I heard that in Japan there are no "official" curse words. Does anyone know if that's true?

The intent of your words that cause a negative feeling are all wrong. It may not be a sin, but it causes harm. Your projection of your negativity on others doesn't lift them up, but tears them down, then that is passed around causing everyone to eat sh$t soup for the day.

**** No!

Each to their own.

A certain type of swearing called "blasphemy" is wrong... using God's name in vain, disrespecting sacred/holy concepts and/or personages.... this is wrong.

The other kind of swearing (sh*t, @ss, f*ck, etc.) is not morally wrong, and is only a mild social taboo no more serious than eating with your elbows on the table or with your mouth open.

It is supose to be consider a sin but alot of people swear like sailors so there is no way why people would stop swearing anyway.

I've known very conservatives that won't say certian words stating that it is a cheating way with the same intentions of the real words. Some examples would be:

Darn = damn
Heck = Hell
Shoot = Shit
Gosh Darn = God Damn
Cheese and Rice = Jesus Christ
Chuck You = Fu@k You

These people aren't any fun at parties. lol

"Cheese and Rice?" lol

Cheese and Rice!! I'm hungry! 😱

People decide what words are bad.

If I raised by child and told him to use the work F*ck for please and please for F*ck then he would think please is a bad word and would be asking if he could f*ck have some cookies.

If you don't dictate it is wrong it is not wrong.

And AFAIK there is nothing in the bible about not being able to say certain words whether it be swearing or cursing.

Yeah, it's the intent of it. I could call you a "Sweet little lady," and say it with such disdain or even not. It's all in my intention.

Words are only that. I believe when the bibles talk about hurtful words such as the ones mentioned, they would mean nothing if there wasn't the intentions/feelings behind them. It's all in the perception of the reciever.

Actually thats how blasphemy is seen too...
Only the religious take issue with it.

The name God is a name we gave to a long-time-ago-theoretical being.

This god- should it exist - is probably a big boy who can take a few words being said about it without tears and tantrums.

Those "cursing" are lightweight when you compare them to what "we" use in Quebec.

Our mains swearing/cursing words are taken straight from the church itself.

Tabernacle (it's the same in french) become "Tabarnak". It's the supreme cursing word in Quebec.

Christ become "Criss"

Sacramental bread --> In french we name that Hostie, become "Osti"
And so on.

Is it bad? Yeah, probably. But what a relief! Those words are the best cure to a case of "D'oh, I just hit my thumb with the hammer!".

I never heard that before but then again I never put God's name in vain and when I was younger I would get soap in my mouth for saying any kind of swear.

I think the only problem that swearing really brings is how it makes you look, in the sense that, from a Christian standpoint, you are suppose to be an example to others.

If you claim to be a Christian, yet walk around spewing profanity every chance you get, you aren't making Christians look very good.

Like if a preacher came up to me and invited me to his "F#cking awesome church, cuz all the rest are sh#t." Parents are probably going to keep their kids away from that place. I know I wouldn't go.

(Well, I might just to see what a sermon was like. 😉 )

Unfortunately, some religions like to apply human frailties to the supreme-being.

To think that the master of all, the creator of time and space would have the shortcomings of a spoiled teenage girl, absurd.
