Ridley Scott's Prometheus

I happened to catch "Mission to Mars" yesterday (the one with Sinise, not Kilmer). Hackneyed/contrived dialogue aside, IMO it conveyed the alien-origin-of-humanity premise better than Prometheus. It was simpler because it didn't tie in or hint at a pre-existing storyline, and more realistic/believable because it didn't require starflight (plus Martian rocks have found their way to Earth).

Hey Mindship I think I saw your avatar in an episode of Seinfeld today. Where is it from?

The episode where where Elaine got the blues song right and had to claim her prize.

She got deafened at the blues bar and when she went to a house party where she wanted to screw the dentist (played by the Breaking Bad guy) she couldn't hear him ask her out and screwed up.

The picture was on the wall.

I remember that one, generally. Gonna have to pay better attention next time I catch it.

F#ck no... i actually watched that a year or so ago. Mission to Mars didnt explore ideas of mortality and self sacrifice etc.. and it's not even a horror movie. They have very different intents. Cant really compare the two. Mission to Mars was pretty forgettable. Prometheus' ideas stick with you.

I don't entirely disagree with you. Overall, Prometheus was a better movie: better writing, more depth, etc. But maybe because I've seen this idea done at least twice before, I wasn't particularly struck by Prometheus' spin. 'This again?' I was more interested in how this related to the Alien storyline.

Yeah, I didn't mind it relating to a pre-existing story. Alien is one of my favorite movies of all time, so that actually enhanced it for me. I don't care if the general premise has been done before, cuz when a dark sci-fi film gets A+ artistic production and direction like this, then I'm a happy dude. They had to clean the sperm off of the screen after I saw Prometheus (3 times). I'm also thrilled to see that it has done so well at the box office. So I anxiously await the day that production begins on the next film (Ridley wants to do it, so I'm sure he get around to it). Which reminds me...

According to IMDB this hasn't even opened yet in Japan and quite a few other countries...

Georgia - August 2012
Spain - 3 August 2012
Venezuela - 3 August 2012
Austria - 8 August 2012
Germany - 9 August 2012
Switzerland - 9 August 2012 (German speaking region)
Japan - 24 August 2012

It'll probably make a killing in Japan, don't you think? Germany, too, perhaps..?

Japan is for full people with silly and shitty taste, so yes, probably will do well there.

The Germans seem to be a very sensible people (now) on the surface, but then again they go nuts over Hasselhoff's singing.

They do love science, however. Many of the pioneeer biologists were Germans, iirc.

No fair. Charlize rocks.

I liked how they kept the theme of the lone woman survivor.

Yes, I was pleased by that as well.

Another thing that I really liked (and have forgotten to mention) is the soothing piano music that comes on with the credits right after the xenomorph appears. Hahaha... awesome. I like little touches like that (I was a little disappointed that the piano music wasn't on the soundtrack. I also wish the trailer music was on the soundtrack).

Little interview with Charlize and Fassbender. The opening paragraph is good...

In Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender play siblings of the future: Fassbender is a highly advanced robot named David, a kind of favorite son to the father of Theron’s character, _Meredith Vickers. While Vickers overcompensates for her insecurities by being bossy, David is smooth and brilliantly manipulative. Their rivalry reveals each other’s central flaw—Vickers is too _emotional and David too cerebral—but they share the goal of supremacy on their own terms. This essentially human conflict between the heart and the head underscores the larger themes of the film: science versus religion; reason versus emotion; the enticement of the unknown versus the evil that lurks within. Add a great many scary creatures that resemble a mash-up of male and female genitals and you have a grand existential battle amid all the sci-fi gore.

The third big release of the summer was Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Despite the mixed reviews, the movie made a respectable $303 million at the box office and with stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace already signed up, a sequel could be coming our way as early as 2014.

Fassbender and Rapace already signed up, you say? The Leech approves. 👆

"Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can't rush it," she said.

That's what she said. 😕
