Yeah thats nuts.. About 20 years ago I believe they changed the earthquake scales on how they rate them, so this quake was actually a 9.9 if we go by the older (real) scale.

Yeah, Richter has been obsolete for a while now. I can't seem to find a conversion factor.

Looks like some parts of Japan could become uninhabitable considering the nuclear situation. Really not a good idea building nuclear power plants on earthquake ridden areas then.
