I think they knew how serious it was for a while. By slowly letting info out it maybe spreads the bad news out a bit and causes less panic maybe.
A wide area around this power plant is going to be uninhabital for a long time, that and the cancer cases which are going to crop up over the years, basically a big mess.
Just hope the aftershocks don´t appear at a bad location setting of more Tsunami´s.
