Ok, let's use a wide concept of nation, let's assume that you need to participate in the imagined community of the US to partain and technically be american. If you live isolated as a fishman in Alaska you wouldn't be american because you wouldn't interact with your community and you'd live in the national space. Or you could be in an american prison as a foreign criminal for sixty years and NOT be american.
