Savage Hulk was the only Hulk out during that time. What other Hulk was he comparing him to? Thanos hid behind his shields because he couldn't take those punches...that was the main reason he said he avoid confronting the Hulk. It wasn't because Hulk liked to punch, its because he knew those punches hurt (which was the reason he hid behind his shields).When has Thanos taken on someone in a contest of STRENGTH that is similar to Hulk. When you answer that, show me some punching fts from this person or some type of strength ft.

So the writer that put those words into Thanos mouth knew that 20 years later WBH would emerge? Yeah freaking right. He was referencing Savage Hulk, not the weaker incarnation of Professor Hulk. I also agree that Thanos would over power Professor Hulk and he did it on panel but again, this has nothing to do with Savage Hulk, the Hulk that Thanos thinks twice about fighting.
Does this make Thanos weak, no, but it gives us a indication of Thanos thoughts on the character and dispite all of his power, he have a feeling he could potentially lose against a pissed Hulk.

The Hulk is very overrated and his opponents are often written down to his level to make the fights interesting...
A very large amount of characters in both Marvel and DC would never be beaten by The Hulk if they fought smart and didnt job (or rather arent written down to his level)...Thanos is one of those characters.
In conclusion, The Hulk can only beat Thanos if Thanos jobs or is written down...

What part do you not understand? Professor Hulk wasn't around during those times so using him as a crutch isn't helping your argument. Thanos fears Savage Hulk and I truly don't blame him. Since you like bringing up Professor Hulk so much, during the infinity war, it was stated on panel that Professor Hulk can kill Thanos. Strange put him to the side as the secret weapon. If it wasn't for Thanos having the gems, he probably would have died by P. Hulks hands.

Surfer quit fighting back Gladiator was stupid. He wasn't refusing to fight his overconfidence cost him which is completely different. You seem to think the circumstances were the same they aren't which changes matters.
