USH'S STAR WARS GAME- CAMPAIGN II POST EPISODE V RENEGADE INTERLUDE- Payday

Can I take a closer look at the black stuff? Figure out what it is before we head off?

It's no material that you recognise.

Can I ask one of the natives if they know what it is or is it time to move on?

They say- reticent as ever- that they told you during the fight. It's the black gold.

I might sound stupid asking this but... is there such a thing as black gold?

Because I'm getting a very terrible feeling that the Servalo Corporation are lying to and exploiting these people.

You've never heard of it. They will explain, though, much as they do not fully understand the process.

It is one of Servalo's security precautions. The gold is technologically altered on Zerok until it turns into this worthless black substance. To turn it back, you need to reverse the process precisely, which as well as the equipment requires knowing the code that was used to transform it in the first place, which changes every time. A Servalo representative comes to the starport each time and tells the convoy leader what the code is (they also provided the equipment as part of the agreement, but the equipment only works within a certain 'band' of codes so Servalo can render it useless when they want).

I - Is that even possible? Has Wentar ever heard of such tech?

And more to the point. If this black gold stuff is worthless why would the pirates keep coming back for it? Surely once they realized they'd give up.

Unless they take the codes, but then Servalo can just render the codes useless and the pirates still get nothing.

This situation is pretty fishy...

It is apparently possible! But yes, you'd reckon it makes life hard for any would-be pirate.

The black gold. Was this a recent security measure or has it always been the plan?

Been there as log as the agreement had been. Even if it was new- fairly pointless to keep it secret. As a deterrent, it works better if everyone knows it is not worth stealing.

That means that the pirates have some method of turning back, or access to the codes...

Xeth will return to the starport aboard his new skiff!

Exactly!

Either the pirates have got their hands on a way of changing the black gold back to regular gold or Servalo is screwing over the Kovanians. Neither is a very pleasant option.

Well, the situation back there is not quite what you were expecting. Kessler has shot someone.

Uh oh! Xeth will get to the scene of the crime as quickly as possible, lightsaber in hand just in case.

"What is going on here?" Xeth asks, particularly of Kessler.

There is corporate security all over the place, very well armed.

"Bit late to help you, I am afraid," says Kessler. "Turns out Servalo had a leak- an inside man getting a cut who was tipping off the pirates. He told them about your presence, so they sent a strike force three times larger than what we had seen before."

Xeth curses mildly in Geonosian.

"Law of the Rim, then," Xeth says. "Looks like you've got him sorted. Unfortunate. The gold supply didn't make it; the strike force was a tough match. We won't be hearing from those pirates again any time soon. Success in the long run, failure in the short."

"I'm just glad you are alive," says Kessler. "The good news is- you're right; that effort must have exhausted whatever the pirates can manage on land. And in recompense for the security slip being on their end, Servalo are going to send a new shipment next week. Would you guard that one too, to be sure? I'm afraid I can't pay you until a shipment gets through anyway."

"I'm game if my associates are," Xeth says. "I have a feeling that this next shipment will breeze right on through."

(Though plot may dictate otherwise...)

Yeah, you have a week!

Okay! Xeth will rest up in the mean time and make preparations to escort the next convoy. He'll patch up Ti.
