Thought that's where Kirkman might be going when he ended the Letter Hacks section of the recent issue with this:

While Negan is probably my favorite character in the comics(his story/backstory was executed perfectly, imo), I am not at all interested in seeing a 'reformed' Negan step in and fill Rick's shoes or w/e. When Negan enters the fray again, he needs to still be Negan or it'll be a complete slap in the face.
