Honestly I kinda liked the human characters- Raleigh's much more emotionally aware than is standard for an action movie protagonist, and Mako had a nice story.
Worldwide numbers just got update, $397,275,000 with China still going strong. US topped $99 mil, but it'll likely stop there. Japan, despite it's low opening, seems to be holding well so they're likely going to continue contributing for awhile.

Pacific Rim crosses 100m domestic, 400m worldwide
Also, while it's only one of 10 movies to reach 400m worldwide this year, 8 of those are existing properties and the 9th is animated, making it the highest grossing original live action movie this year.
I caught a cheap viewing of this and rather enjoyed it.. much more than I was expecting, actually. I liked having mostly new faces rather than people we've seen in dozens of other movies. And Idris Elba is such a f#cking badass. This shit was fun and actually pretty damn well done. Makes me kinda wish that del Toro would take a stab at some of the Lord of the Rings / Hobbit / Silmarillion material. He seems to have a much better sense of pacing.

Excellent news. Even though worldwide grosses have now become more important for these tentpole films - they need them to ensure profitability - breaking the $100 million barrier in North America is an important point, if only for appearance sake. With over $400 million worldwide and counting, it's now qualified for sequel territory. More Kaiju and Jaegers, please!
(The irony being - yes it's an original film, but by the time sequels are released it will be considered just another franchise by the critics, bemoaning originality in the summer season.)
Hey, it's a paycheck.

Its time for Hollywood to change, Stop relying on domestic to determine if a movie gets a sequel.
