Well I assume that if Smoker could beat Vergo in a fair fight then he would do it and not even bother with the heart until the fight was over. Here it seems Smoker knew he wouldn't be able to win so he made it so Law wouldn't be distracted by trying to get his heart.
Really I'm kinda sad Smoker didn't get to beat him since he had a legit beef with the guy for betraying the marines and hurting his subordinates.

Vergo's new theme song. Also, if Law was capable of such Haki then why didn't he use it on Smoker in their fight? mmm
Smoker may actually have stronger Haki than Vergo, but lower physical stats. I don't see Smoker breaking Sanji's leg with a random kick to be honest, so Smoker being punked in a physical match doesn't come as surprising, but his determination has always been kind of strong.
I also like the fact that despite the fact Smoker got punked he was shown to be more competent than Tashigi by miles, he was actually instrumental in defeating Vergo and surely knew that Law's haki would get through him. He's still weaksauce compared to the big guys though.

Wasn't Law mostly worried about hitting Smoker? Plus he wanted his heart, not necessarily a dead Smoker.Though the combo laser circus was pretty cool.
I always assumed both fights were about haki vs haki, of course, Smoker can avoid being hit by regular attacks, but since Law needs haki to hurt Smoker I assume Smoker used his haki to protect himself in both ocasions.

I remember a lot of evasion by Smoker, and the heart attack was a fruit-based one.
