Thanos attempting or not attempting to kill Death is irrelevant to the fact that he would be unable to do so and also likely does not even have the power to kill himself.
Saying Lucifer could be killed so therefore Thanos could doesn't make sense considering that not even Death is beyond being killed/destroyed yet Thanos wouldnt be able to kill her.

Lucifer is at a higher position/status than Death but that doesn't mean he's above death. The whole series shows him avoiding death or harm from the word jump.
