Because, as you just said, it had more to do with the Mortal Kombat characters not having their gory features. This is not a Mortal Kombat game so it has nothing to do with how those games are.
DC vs MK didn't bomb because it was a bad game. It's a solid fighter. It bombed because it was a bad MK game, yet it was never marketed as such. Boon said it over, and over, and over, and yet people still picked up the game expecting to be able to tear Batman's still-beating heart from his chest.
This game has none of that stigma, and is running off of a much improved engine. It's a proper superhero game, not some bastardisation or crossover.
