The UK has a massive publicly funded social work programme that would support people before they get too far gone and eventually commit these crimes. It can be a simple report from a neighbour, colleague etc to the authorities. It just doesn't seem that there's anything equivalent of this in the US...Is there any organisation in the US that you can phone if you are concerned about someone's mental well-being knowing that they will be followed up on rather than just phoning the police because of someone's "suspicious" behaviour?

Most American are ignorant of the fact that depending on the context, the "third position" or "third way" on anything either involves Wal-Mart taking over road maintenance and grandma's medical care or a cop in a black military uniform getting you to sign a doctored confession to the sound of your loved ones being tortured and raped in the next room.

I wonder if half the brutal crimes popping up these days would even be a thought in the minds of most of the people perpetrating them if the economy wasn't so damned bad? I had to think long and hard on the subject, because I really don't believe that a person that is satisfied with their lives are overly willing to stir shit up. Most sane people are looking for several things in life to make them feel successful. Love, companionship, health, stable incomes, a good social life, and security.
I am not taking into consideration, those that are mentally unfit to exist in a normal society of course, which is why I used the words "most of the people". Two days ago in the heart of Mid Town Manhattan, a middle aged man was laid off of work for whatever reason, and he killed the person who let him go and was in turn destroyed on the same street, the Neo Nazi who shot up the Sikh temple likely did it for more reasons than his lack of success in life, but I'm sure one of his reasons for doing the deed hinged on success, and the idea that some foreigner/s were taking jobs that he believed belonged to American White people.
There are certainly no excuses for men running around pinching a woman's ass in the subway, or sexually assaulting women who are sound asleep while traveling, but I ask myself if a sane man in a stable relationship would ever be prompted to risk jail time for committing the assault. I also ask myself why are these men lonely in a society filled with equally lonely women? Could it be that the lack of finances in many cases that drive these men to think less of themselves, and as such believe that no woman would want a man that is going through a rough spot? most likely.
Could the love of money truly be, the root of all evil, or the beginning of it? Just my thoughts.
Back to the OP. I believe that most racist's are plagued by issues of self worth, or the lack thereof. It's so damned easy to blame someone of a different ethnicity, color, sexuality, or religion for their failings instead of looking deep into the mirror. Instead the racist typically reason away their failings, to justify their hatred. I believe that when a violent act of racism, sexism or other violent crime within those parameters occurs, that it was an act borne out of years of indoctrination, which turns the person into a class A reprobate. I also can't help but to believe that we are steadily approaching the inevitable period of the tribulations of man. There are even talks of civil war amongst people of lofty standings in the USA, which is a scary thought indeed. With drought in the mid-west in both Canada, and the USA being the norm what else could be the obvious direction for us?

My girlfriend's a psych major and one of her professors is an expert on psychopaths and avenger violence. I'm really not sure if you could categorize the Sikh Temple shooting and the stuff at the FRC as that but the other recent shootings definitely fit. Anyway, her professor says that often avenger violence comes in waves in direct relation to the level of media coverage because those people who commit those crimes and aren't getting mental help are already time bombs. Seeing news coverage of similar incidents gives them the push to do it by showing them that violence is a viable possibility if others can do it.

I can see that as a very large catalyst for what has or seems to be happening in snowball type fashion across the the US. The type of characteristics that you describe appear to be most prevalent in those people who are less known to vent their frustrations, or in short the passive aggressive personality disorder. Tick tock. I think you nailed it firmly on the head. However something inside of me tells me that there is more to it. Hopelessness, and longing come to mind.
Me and a friend were talking the other day about the 2010 mysterious bird deaths, and I know that it is out of left field, but could you imagine if people were being messed with on a level that we could not see? I'm speaking of sonic technology. I know it sounds bat-shit crazy, but then again when do hundreds of birds suddenly crash into the ground under their own will?
