I would say up until the 23rd Boudakai arc of Dragonball, maybe. From that point and beyond, no. It was a very loose interpretation of the story which is what let Toriyama establish some of the absurdity that became staple to the Dragonball series.
I imagine the same would be true for most other iterations of the character as well, with a few possible exceptions.
