The creators said Twilight will not outlive her friends meaning she won't be living as long as Celestia which makes you wonder what's really keeping the royal mares up and running if immortality (assuming it is) isn't the natural lifespan of an Alicorn. What if Princess Celestia and Luna were born from the Tree of Harmony and as long it lives, they live? You see the sun and the moon on the tree which should give a hint to something but then you remember Twilight's cutie mark is on there too so shouldn't she also be practically immortal? Maybe it's because she wasn't born directly from the tree and Celestia exposed her mother to some kind of magical radiation from it while she was pregnant with her and due to being born from her mortal mom, Twilight couldn't be granted all the perks.
Or am I just overthinking this and Twilight is immortal but will lose it because she'll be stripped of her Alicorn status later on in the show due to fan complaints?
I think Luna and Celestia are 'natural alicorns' while Twilight and Cadence were artificially made into alicorns through mastery of Magic and Love respectively. We've seen that Cadence has aged from flashbacks and considering this chick:
Is seemingly not around anymore, I think artificial alicorns age and die normally.
But Luna and Celestia were born as alicorns and are different, immortal beings.
Trixie in "Magic Duel" confirms it's possible, if difficult, to use magic to become younger or older, and use the same spell on others. That was with with something called the Alicorn's Amulet, incidentally. It's certainly possible that Celestia and Luna use aging spells to keep eternal youth, and they're certainly powerful enough to do so. If true, that would mean Twilight would be able to choose whether or not she outlives her friends, or give them a longer lifespan as well. Though I don't imagine the latter would end that well, either.
