Smell the Ashes
I'm on the fence about this. I get the point and it's totally valid.
Honestly, I think it would be nice for developers/publishers to release a roster update for the next season for a small fee so you do not need to buy an entirely new game if you want to replicate roster changes for the next season.
However, I think it's one of those situations where the companies are beholden to fans and I assume the sporting leagues. Honestly, you might have to release a new version every year. Fans want to play with the newest rules, the newest systems, newest teams, players and etc....and that takes time to develop and assume cost.
I love sport games but I generally only buy every few years. I picked up F1 2020 (which was awesome because it added create a team function) but the last version I bought was 2017.
But also....most of these sport games are not bought by hardcore gamers...but bought by the casual gamers that might only play FIFA (and put 1000 hours into it).
I think the biggest issue I have is they remove features every so often from previous generations....and I also wish EA followed the same steps as Ubisoft does...have features that part of all sport titles. You can create your own NHL team, with stadium and etc...but you can't in FIFA.
But that might be a license issue with the sporting organizations.
