You were with your implication that we were assuming everything that hits Danny moves faster than a bullet. Danny could get rid of large aoe much easier than he can with small bursts of sand. Did you even watch the fight? Gaara was able to use the tsunami of sand because he was taking it from the environment, iirc, he was actually making more sand while fighting Kimi. So yes, he needs to be fighting in a place where he can either gather more sand or make it, because his gourd does not hold enough sand and isn't made of enough to do any kind of large aoe attacks you are suggesting. No, Danny does not need to be up close. Danny and Davos blew out an entire floor of a building with a clash of their respective attacks. The IF, when used like he took down the helicarrier has a large radius of effect.
Also, Danny could get close to Gaara, so that's irrelevant.
I am aware of this. He grinded the material in the forest into sand. Are they fighting in a locked stone room or something that would not allow gaara to do the same with the other organic materials? They don't have to be in a forest necessarily.
Yes, he does. Unless there's some other character where he can fight to create the effects your talking about, blowing out the ground underneath him, blowing the general area, etc would only affect him. Unless you think the shockwave's of the ironfist would blow apart gaara's sand...which is unlikely in my opinion.
He could try to get close to gaara. But he'll have to watch the shifting sand at his feet, the air where gaara can drop tsuna shigure, and weave through the sand being shot at him (which while not intensely fast isn't slow either).
I agree that if Ironfist connects with a sand barrier, he'll blow through it easily (Ironfist >>> Chidori of any kind ) but to get there he'll risk his limbs. Even a simple act of placing sand where he's going to step and sweeping his feet out from underneath him would be effective.

I know, people think Danny can be hurt by mere sand 😂
Oy.......
Okay first off... LEE, y'know the one this thread is ACTUALLY ABOUT..
Would absolutely stomp Rand.
When it comes to Lee's speed, in the Chunin exams, without opening gates or dropping weights, Rock absolutely humiliated Sasuke using his Sharingan, which at this point in the story were already used to detect Haku's movements jumping mirror to mirror (reflection/speed of light). And, he did it with such speed that Sasuke thought he was using ninjutsu to do it. We also saw Lee move so fast against Dosu that he thought Lee vanished right in front of him and Dosu previously moved so fast through an entire room of ninja that no one saw him until he was in the middle of attacking Kabuto.
Even without his perks, Lee is INSANELY fast compared to the average street level comic book hero. And while it's true that Rand's a bona fide bullet dodger, bullets are the biggest jobbers in comics at the street level, but even ignoring that, Lee isn't a bullet. Arguing against Lee's speed versus Iron Fist is like arguing against Iron Fist being fast enough to punch Spider-man. Iron Fist isn't a bullet, he's a skilled martial artist with the experience to land shots on Parker in melee despite Parker's speed and precog.
Lee isn't some pseudo retarded speedster who will be running around Rand in literal circles just asking to get clotheslined. He'll be hitting Rand from multiple angles, and every direction at various levels.
And Danny doesn't even have a skill advantage here, Lee's h2h is his bread and butter, it's his specialty, even other ninjas comment on his training being at excessive levels.
Then there's his strength... he punched arm deep into the ground and uprooted a massive piece of tree with one arm in a split second.
All of these are attributes you have to consider while ALSO considering this is BASE level stuff. No sake, no weights off, and no gates open.
The only way Rand wins is by landing the IF in a direct shot and it's against an opponent who fights actively avoiding techniques he knows he even *might* not be able to weather.
Rand *can* win... he just isn't likely to.
Against Gaara, same deal. Gaara was able to defend (barely) against Lee going all out in speed, and it took a combination of Lee's speed and a piercing energy attack to be able to break through his barrier. Thing is, Rand while fast, isn't THAT fast, and would never leave Gaara blitzed specifically for the reasons mentioned above about Lee. Gaara killed Dosu easily. Rand while fast, would not be so fast as to be unseen moving in a room crowded by ninja (Not just some nameless goons or thugs) IMO, but even IF he was, he'd have to be as fast as Lee to present a threat to Gaara offensive defense. Having a glass canon is not really helpful to ensure victory against either of these two opponents.
