Muslim Country Checklist

Muslim Country Checklist

After watching Zero Dark Thirty, I think it would be informative to make some lists of Muslim societies, and how they relate to the west. See how they stand.

1. Stable, moderate country that is friendly to the west.
2. Ally of the west, but is on shaky ground with strained relations.
3. Openly hostile to the west, looking for war at any moment.

I know the popular saying: Radical Muslims make up less that 0.01% of the Muslim population, but the get 99% of the world's headlines. But if too many are in one country, well...

For me, stable Muslim countries include Turkey, Morocco, Kuwait, Jordan, United Arab Emirates...am I missing anyone?

/facepalm

Oh come on!

Durkadurkaistan, Islamoistan and Terroristan are all bad ones, so I'm told.

Some people get caught up in the emotion of labeling all Islam as a religion of evil, and we should exterminate them all. Well, let's make more of an effort to label the crazies and the non-crazy. That's what this is about.

what fun

Japan.

You're simplifying things to an incredible degree.

You're ignoring the possible disparities between a government's stance and the majority stance of its people (Turkey is a great example--a member of NATO and yet a large majority of it's population professes some degree of Anti-American sentiment). Your post is also a little odd because you talk about Islamic Extremism as if it's the only cause for Anti-Western anger. Look at Syria--a secular regime that's virulently Anti-American. Arab Nationalism can be as powerful a force as Islamic Extremism when it comes to stoking Anti-Western feelings.

As to your list, ignoring the problems I've pointed out above, you skip a major segment of your sliding scale:

(should go between 2 and 3) Country that isn't allied to any Western nations but also isn't aggressive or radicalized.

I would also argue that there isn't a single Muslim nation that belongs in your third category. Iran isn't by any means looking for a war, it's all posturing.

I'll help you: There are no crazy muslim countries.

You're welcome.

What is a Muslim Country?

Dividing humanity in to desirables and non-desirables doesn't in any way sound familiar.

For the most part I agree. I would definitly say Iran has made statements (wiping out Israel) that could qualify it as not sane

My statement is a subset of the larger "there are no muslim countries", but lets ease him into it slowly.

haha yeah. you know that's wrong though...right?

Sharia law countries are probably considered "Muslim Countries", though the proper terminology might be Islamic Countries or something hip like Muslim Majority Countries. Not sure how it breaks out exactly or what's now PC.

Only 6 nations on the planet enforce strict Sharia law

4 are American allies

- Pakistan
- Afghanistan
- Saudi Arabia
- Yemen

And, to the OP's point, they are only unstable insofar as they support America...

Mauritania, in West Africa, is not necessarily stable, but certainly holds no ill will to the Americans.

Only Iran would qualify as a "3" then...

There are many more nations that have Islam as a national religion or have Sharia courts, but so does the UK...

The fear mongering about Islam is very much like the old fear mongering about Communism, when the truth is more complicated. It's the Islamic nations that merge religious traditions with political policy (or at least, their interpretation of Islam) that are the trouble spots in the world. No fundamentalist state is sitting on it's hands, peacefully.

so you are against those nations that America would call it's most staunch allies in the Middle East and South Asia?

The concept is ill defined, so no.

What, you mean like Iran? They fit the description of what I wrote above your post.

Or if you are talking about Saudi Arabia...who knows how different the relationship would be if the Saudis didn't have all that oil and(literally) own 4% of the USA.
