Justice League (2018)

"I watched the rough cut of Justice League last week. It has pretty much the same qualities and the same flaws as "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", but with a bigger scope and way more jokes. When it works, it works great. When it doesn't, it gets pretty messy. Ask me anything, I guess. Though some details I'll try to keep vague out of self-preservation."

Spoiler:

Q. How was Slade?
A. He was on screen for less than a minute and only had one line, but Joe Manganiello looked cool with an eyepatch, I guess. The scene might not even make to the final cut due to the problems with the standalone Batman movie.

Q. Is Flash Jar Jar? Does Cyborg looks as bad on film?
A. Flash, Not really, but he comes very close at times. Cyborg, There were large sections of unfinished CGI still, so I can't really imagine how they'll improve on it by the time the movie comes out, but the design is hit and miss in the movie, especially in the face. Gave me "Green Lantern" flashbacks

Q. what is the plot of the movie?
A. Pretty straightforward Macguffin chase with the Mother Boxes, right down to the second act team break-up.

Q. Does Superman have a beard? How much screen time Supes have?
A. Yes. I'd say it's about 40 to 50 minutes or so (it's a rough cut, so it was over 3 hours. A lot of it will get chopped down).

Q. So we get a mess again? Why can't we get just a simple plot like most movies?
a) Enemy appears
b) Hero faces enemy
c) Hero is either defeated or struggles to defeat enemy
d) Hero comes back (Probably with allies or improved powers)
e) Hero defeats bad guy and everyone is happy.
A. That's pretty much what you get, but with a lot of bells and whistles and flashbacks and afterlife sequences.

Q. run time? and how much screentime does superman have
A. At about 3 hours and 45 minutes as it is. It'll get a shorter cut to run theatrical for sure.

Q. How much New Gods related stuff is there?
A. Not much. Only a few vague references and dreams.

Q. Mullet or nah?
A. Longer hair, but not actually a mullet.

Q. I knew DC executives were behind all this ****ing spamming. Man they really are desperate aren't they
A. You joke, but they actually are pretty desperate. "Justice League" is a make-or-break movie for them.

Q. how does supes come back to life?
A. They use the Kryptonian scout ship in Metropolis to revive him.

Q. "afterlife sequences" what?
A. Superman spends a large portion of the movie in a afterlife/limbo/purgatory thing modeled after Kent Farm, interacting with the ghost of Jonathan Kent. They're preparing for a heavy storm that represents the impeding alien invasion and gets closer whenever the villains get their hands on another Mother Box.

Q. darkseid where?
A. Three minor scenes. Two enveloped in shadows, one where they actually reveal his face.

Q. i'm sick of that scout kryptonian ship already
A. It gets destroyed.

Q. Is Gal Gadot terrible in this like the last one?
A. She's pretty bland. But she's also very pretty and her action scenes are fun. There was no spark between her and Ben Affleck, though.

Q. the execs running the screening, how worried or desperate for feedback were they? and why do you think they cant get it right?
A. They're very cautious with this movie, they need it to be a big hit. But I'm hearing that, while they had solid feedback, it isn't quite as high as they were expecting, so they'll probably rework more material ahead of the release. That's also why they're keeping a trailer pretty close to their chest. As for why they're struggling, I'm guessing it's because they didn't really plan that far ahead. In "Justice League", for example. They have to introduce Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg, and that leads to a bunch of pace-breaking scenes where they monologue or flashback about who they are and how they got their powers.

Q. is the big bad steppenwolf? if so, how was he?
A. Yes. He's alright. A textbook alien invader who commands a large army and waxes poetic about the destruction of mankind and whatnot. Honestly he just feels like a warm-up for Darkseid.

Q. do batman and superman argue/fight? if so how?
A. Not really. They're on friendly terms.

Q. how much of snyder's style in the cut you saw?
A. It's a classic Snyder joint but with more Marvel-esque humor. Same framing, same color palette, same kind of symbolism.

Q. Does it give any more Batman backstory?
A. Briefly touches up on Robin's death.

Q. How much screen time the new batsuit gets? And how does it look? Why the goggles? Why does he need it? Is there an armor up scene?
A. At about 20 minutes or so. Looks good. The goggles have no real purpose. It's reinforced so he can go toe-to-toe with Parademons. Yes, there's a suit-up sequence.

Q. Are there any batman scenes like the warehouse fight?
A. Not really. He mostly fights Parademons in this. There is a cool moment where he uses tight spaces to trick them into destroying each other.

Q. Is there a point to Cyborg or he's a token character? Is Aquaman interesting and does the character has some depth or they made him too much of an edgelord so people won't make fish jokes?
A. Cyborg, He's important to defeating the villais. Aquaman is pretty good, actually. Probably the best non-Batman character. They managed to give him some depth even though for most of the movies he's just a broody *******.

Q. how does the 'banter' go then? also, how is the flash time travel in bvs explained?
A. They banter about who won their fight and who's best fit to lead. Batman thinks he's calling the shots because he's Batman, but everyone is following Superman instead. So he agrees to let Superman take charge. Flasj, More or less. His message about Lois being the key is important to reviving Superman, and it's sort-of established that the "him" Batman was always right about wasn't Superman as implied, but Darkseid (Batman is an oracle). But they don't actually explain the scorched earth from "Batman v Superman" or how Flash travelled back in time and why.

Q. How does the film start off
A. With a flashback/dream of humans, amazons and atlanteans fighting Parademons in ancient times.

Q. Is it true there's a bromance between Flash and Aquaman?
A. Not really. Flash annoys Aquaman and in the end Aquaman grows fond of him. There's more of a connection between Flash and Cyborg.

Q. How is JK simmons? How does it setup future movies? is jesse eisenberg in it?
A. He's good for the limited screentime he has. Gets one of the funniest scenes in the third act.
Lex doesn't set up much other than Darkseid now knowing about the Justice League and wanting revenge and Luthor hiring Deathstroke to kill Batman.

Q. Do we See more of the knightmare sequence or that timeline at all?
A. No

Q. Does it try to be overly deep and full of it self again like BvS
A. Sort of, it has bible quotes and stuff.

Q. What is Lex Luthors role in this. Does he and Deathstroke form the Injustice Gang?
A. Luthor is in Arkham Asylum. Batman visits him for information on Steppenwolf, which Luthor leverages for release from Arkham. Batman agrees, but once Luthor tries to return to LexCorp he finds out Bruce Wayne is the new owner. Luthor is later seen hiring Deathstroke to kill Batman.

Q. do they reference suicide squad at all? who plays darkseid? is ezra miller flash bad?
A. Nope. He's CGI. Didn't recognize the voice. Flash,Hit and miss.

P2.

Spoiler:

Q. were there any surprise cameos or other charcters? any easter eggs you noticed? what do they say about robin?
A. Well, the leader of the ancient humans is what I can only assume an early ancestor of Bruce Wayne complete with a bat-like cloak/cape thingy. Didn't keep my eye out for easter eggs, sadly. Though I know they name-drop several classic DC Comics cities. Batman and Alfred have a brief talk about Batman being ready to take partners again. Batman says he can't afford the luxury of being ready.

Q. "leader of the ancient humans is what I can only assume an early ancestor of Bruce Wayne complete with a bat-like cloak/cape thingy."the ****?
A. They go some weird directions with Batman in this. He is also literally an oracle and is having premonitory dreams (like the knightmare from "Batman v Superman"😉 essentially because fate wanted so.

Q. Any honka honka moments?
A. You mean poor jokes? Some of the Flash's humor falls really flat. He references movies so much it gets annoying, and they try to make him really quirky which also often falls flat.

Q. Does Supes get a big save the day moment when he comes back?
A. yes

Q. What does Lois do?
A. Lois' role is fairly minor. She's still mourning Clark's death and working at the Daily Planet. For some reason she can sense Clark's presence while he's trapped in the afterlife. Batman figures out she's the key to bringing Superman back and Flash brings her to the battlefield in Metropolis. She reaches out to Clark while's he's in the rebirth matrix and her voice calls him back to life. They're later seen reuniting at the farm. Martha is also there.

Q. What are the biggest action sequences in the movie?
A. There's four main action scenes: The warehouse fight, the Themyscira fight, the Atlantis fight and the Metropolis fight. In terms of scope they get bigger in that order.

Q. Any cringe moments where they tried to be serious but it comes out looking silly. Like Lex Ahoy Ahoy Luthor or Joker's honka honka line.
A. Aquaman deciding to join the fight could be seen as pretty tryhard.

Q. what is the best and worst joke in the move?
A. I really like Gordon's little moment in the end, but that's a visual gag. Worst is probably the Flash spitballing names for the team.

Q. Big supes fan, how long does he don the black suit? You mentioned rebirth matrix can you detail that, how does he get in there who does it? Does he go back to his original suit? Any epic fights with him and steppe wolf?
A. Only one scene. Five minutes tops. The league puts him in there. It's already on the scout ship. Yes. Yes.

Q. any green lantern references?
A. no

Q. So is Aquaman's reason to join the team weak/badly explained?
A. More or less. He's brooding in his home village because his father has recently passed away, which is why he turns down Batman's offer. Mera drops by and tells him something is coming, but he doesn't really care. Then we get that scene from the trailer where he's chugging vodka. He has a change of heart, and gets up in slow motion, drinks straight from the bottle, smashes it on the ground, rips out his shirt in slowmotion and let's the waves consume him. It's pretty silly, and the temp score was some heavy metal rock. It was too much.

Q. is gonna have a seventh justice league member?
A. Alfred is there in the final battle operating the jet's rear turret. He's badass enough I consider him the seventh leaguer.

Q. does batman fight against the main villain? or does he watch like in bvs against doomsday?
A. Briefly before Superman bails him out.

Q. Do they go into space ? Who is the most underdeveloped justice league member? Is the movie as big a mess as batman v superman?
A. No. The Flash. Not yet.

Sounds pretty much like I had imagined.

I only hope that this movie stirs them in to action.

Sounds like some of the good outweights the bad, if they legitimately go with some of those ideas for Batman that is kind of mind boggling. If this film is even comparable to a solid middle of the road MCU film, then it will be at least worth watching once. Why the **** does it have to be so long though?

The failure of DC movies is entirely Zack Snyder's fault. Why the **** does a studio pour hundreds of millions of dollars and trust the foundation of its most precious properties in the hands of an idiot

Yeah. The WB has had their collective heads up their A-Holes for so long it will literally take Brain Surgery for get them to change at this point.

Spoiler:

Q. So how do they beat Steppenwolf?
A. They send him back to Apokolips and he's offed by Darkseid.

Q. How do they send him back to Apokolips
A. Cyborg reverts the gateway to pull the Parademons back into Apokolips.

Q. What about Mera and is it true about Iris?
A. Mera is briefly in it. She's the commander of Atlantis Royal Guard and not married to Aquaman yet. In fact she doesn't even like him.
Iris has a brief two appearances, yes. She's a newspaper intern who tries fishing for stories about the Flash in the Central City PD and is very quirky and stuff. Barry has a crush on her.

Q. So do we see any of Darkseid or Apokolips itself?
A. You see both very briefly.

Q. So we know Supes is alright, but what about Clark? Does he get his life back and job at the Planet? What about him and Lois?
A. He reunites with Lois, but they don't mention what's become of his life in Metropolis.

Q. Do the Parademons look pretty much like they did in the Knightmare bit of BvS? What about this new pic? What's going on here? (talking about the recent JL pics released)
A. Yes.
That's the Justice League trying to retrieve Superman's body from the scout ship.

Q. Why would his body be there instead of his grave? I think you said Steppenwolf took it, but wouldn't he take it to one of his ships? Why the scout ship?'
A. He wants to harness the Codex and only the scout ship can do that.

Q. Are there any hero vs. hero fights?
A. Nope aside from a brief scuffle between Batman and Aquaman early on and Wonder Woman punching Aquaman later on.

Q. Describe some big moments in the fights
A. Some which I liked
-Batman fighting Parademons at Stryker's Island and using the close spaces to trick them into destroying themselves and each other
-Aquaman saving the League from some Parademons in Themyscira and summoning marine lifeforms to destroy the ones attempting to escape
-Wonder Woman lassos a hugh warship and uses it as a wrecking ball to destroy a swarm of Parademons before throwing it through the gateway.
-Superman saving Batman from Steppenwolf.

Q. based on what you saw, do you think general audiences will enjoy the film, or will it be really divisive like MoS and BvS? It definitetly sounds safer.
A. It's safer, and I imagine general audiences will enjoy the action and the humor, but there's a lot of strange things Snyder added that might throw them off, and a lot could go wrong in editing. The cut I watched is over three hours long.

Q. Tell me what Flash does please, also is the actor for him good
A. He's alright. Doesn't do much other than quip and fight. He doesn't have an arc. Wonder Woman doesn't either.

Q. They've said that Batman killing will be addressed, is it? and if so how?
A. Gordon brings up how he's been filling up the prisons and not the morgues nowadays and Batman says he lost his way and is fixing that.

Q. how fast is Flash? Faster than tv show Flash?
A. About the same.

Infinity war will probably be the same

You mean Avengers was basically the same as the JL plot.

An actual step in the right direction.

That's obvious. He pulled out as director because he obviously wasn't confident in the film. He clearly wants out.

Shame, given he's the best part of the DCEU.

If I were him, i'd try to get out of doing the solo Batman movie too.
