Holy shit. That's horrible. My prayers go out to Zack and his family. I may not like his movies, but no parent should outlive their child, and he seems like a nice dude regardless of his talents as a filmmaker.
Some errant DC fan must have rubbed a magic lamp and wished for Whedon to direct Justice League, but the genie was one of those ******* Monkey's Paw type wish granters.

Wow, yeah, don't wish that upon anyone. Not even Michael Bay. God that's awful.
My oldest brother committed suicide. So my deepest condolences as well.
It's cool that Joss Whedon is taking over, though.

That being said...The cynic in me still says the movie is in trouble, and Warners is taking advantage of this situation to try and get Joss Whedon to fix it, without it looking like that's what they're doing.
Or perhaps it wasn't necessarily in trouble, but WB were worried about all the negativity of this being another Zack Snyder film. Attaching Whedon's name to it as a co-director will certainly get some people to see this with a more open mind.
Also, Whedon's living a fanboy dream, being a part of creating both Avengers and Justice League. Who says a person can't be a fanboy of both Marvel and DC?
Whedon likely won't get more than a co-writing credit, similar to Tony Gilroy last year for Rogue One when he was brought in to write and direct some of the reshoots.
Optically, it's looking most curious regarding Joss Whedon. He keeps being diplomatic about his relationship with Marvel Studios & Disney, but instead of pursuing the smaller projects he wanted to do following Age Of Ultron, he's getting deeper into working for their top competitor. This is a man who is looking to stick it to someone. 😖hifty:

I'm betting Snyder is done with the DCEU. He probably won't be working anytime soon. Well, at least a year or so. I can see Whedon taking over Justice League Part 2.

I wanted Zack Snyder off Justice League, but not for this kind of reason. That being said...

Snyder and his wife gave the duties to Whedon. This is after he signed on to do Batgirl, so Whedon is part of the WB family now.

But isn't it kind of late in the game for Whedon to really fundamentally improve the film? It's already all been shot, right? Or is he doing some reshoots?
That was my thinking. The movie should be in post by now... So I really don't see him having a huge influence unless he makes some sort of massive change during reshoots or something.

Or unless they push the film back.. Is that possible at this point?
It's possible, sure, as it hasn't been distributed yet that I know of. Unlikely as hell though, I would imagine. WB is so desperate to compete with Disney that I don't see them pushing it back at all.
So apparently (going by Collider's report) Joss Whedon was already writing these extra scenes regardless. Now he's just directing them, along with the re-shoots and finishing the film off.
So between that and Affleck producing, and Geoff Johns involvement in all DC films now it seems they already had a whole support team set up around Snyder this time.
So that actually gives me some hope for this.
Oh but btw, they didn't force Whedon to take over from Zack, because they offered Zack and Deborah to push the release date back so they can come back later to finish it off. But Zack was happy to give it over to Whedon. Pretty fortunate for them to have had Whedon around. And kudos to Zack for that decision. Do feel for him at this sad time in his life.
