it would seem to suggest that unicron delights in seeing sentient beings dropped into a lava pool one by one when he could have easily just digested their energy the easy way. also remember the long chain of robots that proceed and followed them both on the conveyer. it leads me to conclude that while it can serve as the ends of an immune system, its main function is evil delight.

it seems to suggest that he has a specific use for terminating them in a different fashion, either because they have a unique energy (unlikely since in the TF universe, any form of energy can easily be transformed to energon.) or he takes a petty delight in executing people. considering the quintesons built him, and given their nature, perhaps his cruelty is even hardwired

If someone had just detonated a whole moon in your face, you'd probably want some revenge on them too, fitting in with your "hardwired evil" theory...
And the Quintessons did indeed create Unicron in the cartoon continuity.

The transformers have metals that can mass shift and do all kinds of crazy shit Dynametal is referred to in the series, for example.
Could also be that Unicron likes melting that down and harvesting it for his own purposes, seperately from the seemingly more regular metals that the moons and Cybertron are made with..

possible as well. he could use their unique metals to produce different organs or whatever (though his general digestion could conceivably also perform a separation of raw materials). however, im swayed enough by this point to consider it as an alternative possibility.
