'energon' is just another incarnation of energy (as deceptions were able to draw it even from human-made power sources). since he was obviously drawing the same required energy from planetary raw material, you're explanation falls flat.

It's an obvious fact because transformers run off energon, and as he dropped them in the vats, they melted, and since energy can't be destroyed, only changed from one form to another, it makes sense that when they died, the energon stayed behind and was converted to use. Why else would he even bother melting them down if not for that purpose when it's obvious his internal defenses could just kill them.
And just because he ate planets didn't mean he wasted potential energy. As big as he is, every little bit helps.

Yeah, he is. He openly admits to it in other places. His goal is to piss people off as much as possible without breaking the rules. He can't resist sometimes and breaks the rules to get his troll on. Anyways.... On the subject of the Autobots being smelted I think its highly possible that Unicron in addition to seperating mechanical lifeforms (or even exosuit having organics) for an energon harvesting thing, that it makes sense that a lot of these victims would be capable of awesome offensive feats and having weaponry that could be a damage causer, so dooming them in a more secure, possibly less delicate environment seperate from the rest of his system that dealt with general bits of smashed up planet would make sense also. (Look at the damage Arcee was able to cause with her blaster away from this hardcore area.. Causing mass floods and destruction etc)
