They'd already had success before Iron Man, though. It was a safer bet than if, say, DC made a Flash or Aquaman movie right now.
While the financial successes obviously belong to Marvel, the fact that Marvel has made Superhero franchises ridiculously popular should be sufficient to make DC comfortable enough to think people will support their movies too.
They need to make a good movie (which its looking like MoS will be) and then make it very clear that MoS's universe is connected to other characters who will eventually all be seen together on screen like Marvel's Avengers.
The most important thin is that first step, they have to make a good movie... and follow it up with more good movies. Not all of Marvel's movies have been outstanding, but none of them have sucked. One misstep could make a lot of people lose interest in the larger plan.
