In terms of box office it's Harry Potter although I think Star Wars, James Bond, Tolkien and The Avengers and possibly Star Trek will all over take it. In terms of merchandising and popularity nothing will come anywhere close to Star Wars.
Marvel could come incredibly close if not surpass Star Wars. They have great choices for merchandising.

Should probably have mentioned Toy Story and other pixar films for merchandising.

It's settled for now; Potter.

I also don't consider marvel in general a franchise in this regard since different movie companies fund these movies.

Star Wars.

there's also the simple fact that Star Wars isn't done, but HP is.

more movies... more books, more toys, more general merch. Disney is also making theme park attractions.

give it up, Quan.

If the first movie is any indication, then the Avengers will probably become the biggest franchise.

But as it is now, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and LOTR are the ones that easily come to mind.

I agree, but let me add The Matrix, Alien(s)/Prometheus (kind of), and Spiderman to the mix as well. Jurassic Park comes to mind as well.

JK Rowling is only worth 1 billion, so adding her net worth wouldn't help. As 27b > (24b + 1b)25b

This is an old post, but I'd like to add that Rowling has always denied the "billionaire" label:
Couric: I know that you’re very modest about your success. On the other hand, I read, Jo, that you are one of four self-made female billionaires in the world—
Rowling: Billionaires?
Couric: No, is that wrong?
Rowling: It’s okay— well— You feel really sorry for me, I’m not a billionaire, what a tragedy.
Couric: Well—
Rowling: No, this about that figure came from Forbes Magazine.
Couric: Right.
Rowling: And I have been told that they are speculating on all possible future earnings, all past earnings. And, frankly, they’re adding figures together that don’t exist. So I am not a billionaire. I’ve got plenty of money, more money than I ever dreamed I would have. But I am not a billionaire.
Couric: So the b-word does not apply?
Rowling: No, not at all. But if we assume that they’ve inflated the other women similarly. So, you know, relatively speaking, I’m doing okay.

And is officially no longer on the Forbes list as well:

Nah. It's just funny when people acted like its done despite the cash cow it is. Potter will reign supreme for years to come.

SW won, it was shown with figures.

Harry Potter coming out with more doesn't mean a thing until it proves it's worth more than the SW franchise, which SW is also set to continue growing, but you're a ridiculous child, so you do what you do 🙂

No, it did not. Potter won and will win in the future. Can't wait to compare the numbers for years to come. I'm always right.

Harry Potter is currently leading the pack in terms of box office success. At $7.7 billion it's beating second place's James Bond's $6.1 billion.

Star Wars coming in at distant 4th with $4.3 billion. Though I have a feeling the future Potter films won't be as popular as the future Star Wars ones. There's been build up and hype about a sequel trilogy for decades, but the Potter movies franchise owes its success to the success of its origin chronicle. Follow up books will be paltry in the popularity department compared to the original series. They struck gold lightning in a bottle. It won't be repeated.

If anything, the next few years will likely see Marvel take top spot. They have a slew of movies slated and they've been nothing but cash cows.

That list is unadjusted for inflation.

Your inability to add and igorance of inflation don't change the facts. SW is the greater cash-cow over HP and will likely be unless Disney really screws up and/or these other non book based HP films do some crazy numbers. Cry some more now 🙂

Star Wars will be.

Whic franchise is at the top of the mountain. Just judging the movies we see Potter atop the mountain. Including the totality of all products, toys, amusement parks, etc. we stil see Potter at the top.

Again don't use words which describe yourself. Kinda silly. Just sayin'.

Hard numbers were listed multiple times here; that's what we judge by. Judging by which franchise you personally happen to like more is faulty 🙂

Another "no you" type of derp response. Cry some more now 🙂

From the Wiki article: "If ancillary income from merchandising is included, then Star Wars is the most lucrative franchise, earning more than $22 billion in total, with direct income from the films themselves accounting for just one third of overall revenues."

Star Wars is just worth more money over the long run.

Wrong. I already told you before and movies alone Potter wins. Edgy thing considered Potter wins.

Go derp yourself.
