So he wasn't an actual friend or ally before that point and was pretty unpredictable to say the least. Also he was warming up to Magneto, and we saw him watching him in Awe on Tv at the end, so I personally think he would have been torn in that scenario.
He had no specific loyalty to Xavier or Beast that was for sure.
