That doesn't mean he's weak... All of the fellowship ran from the balrog including Legolas and Aragorn. That doesn't make them weak. Point is, all of the orcs were fodder so the playing field was the same for all. Gimli won and proved he's not weak and actually killed more than a powerful elf.
